Biography

Anna Falcone was born in Cosenza, a city in the southern region of Calabria, in 1971 (age: 52 years, as of 2023). She is the eldest of three daughters of Arturo Falcone and Luisa Bentivegna, both teachers and socialist activists.

Anna Falcone grew up in a politically engaged family, as her father was also the mayor of Grimaldi, a small town near Cosenza, and her mother was a municipal councilor in Cosenza. She inherited her passion for politics and justice from her parents, who were opposed to the corruption and influence of the Mafia in their region. She has a sister Maria Falcone. She was close to her brother Giovanni Falcone.

Anna attended the classical high school in Cosenza, where she excelled in her studies and developed an interest in law and history. She then moved to Rome, where she enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Rome La Sapienza. She graduated with honors in 1995, and then obtained a PhD in constitutional law from the University of Lecce in 1999. She also completed a specialization course in human rights and democracy at the University of Bologna in 2000.

Career and Political Activism

Anna Falcone began her professional career as a lawyer in Rome, where she worked on civil and administrative cases, especially related to environmental and social issues. She also joined the Socialist Party, following the footsteps of her father, who was a member of the historic Italian Socialist Party (PSI) led by Bettino Craxi. She became the national head of the Equal Opportunities Department of the Socialist Party, and also participated in various campaigns and initiatives to promote women’s rights, democracy, and social justice.

In 2013, Anna Falcone decided to run for the national parliament as a candidate of the Civil Revolution, a left-wing coalition led by Antonio Ingroia, a former anti-mafia prosecutor and colleague of her brother Giovanni. However, the Civil Revolution failed to reach the minimum threshold of votes to enter the parliament, and Anna was not elected. Despite this setback, she continued her political activism, joining the movement for the No vote in the 2016 constitutional referendum, which aimed to reject the reform proposed by the then Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The No vote won with a large majority, and Renzi resigned.

In 2018, Anna Falcone accepted the offer of Pietro Grasso, another former anti-mafia prosecutor and the leader of the Free and Equal (LeU), a left-wing party that opposed the policies of Renzi and his Democratic Party (PD). She ran for the Senate in the Calabria region, but again she was not elected, as the LeU obtained only a small percentage of votes.

Anna did not give up on her political aspirations, and in 2020 she announced her intention to run for the presidency of the Calabria region, as the leader of a new left-wing coalition called Calabria in Comune (Calabria in Common). The regional elections were scheduled for January 2021, but they were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her Brother Death

On May 23, 1992, Giovanni Falcone was assassinated by the Corleonesi Mafia, the most powerful and ruthless faction of the Sicilian Mafia, led by Salvatore Riina. Falcone was traveling from the airport to Palermo with his wife Francesca Morvillo, who was also a judge, and three of his bodyguards. A bomb exploded under his car on the highway near Capaci, a town near Palermo. The bomb was detonated by remote control by Giovanni Brusca, a notorious Mafia hitman, who was later arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. The bomb was made of half a ton of explosives, which were obtained from unexploded World War II bombs. The explosion was so powerful that it was recorded on local earthquake monitors. Falcone and his companions died instantly in the attack.

The assassination of Giovanni Falcone shocked and outraged the entire nation, and sparked a massive public reaction against the Mafia and its allies. A few months later, on July 19, 1992, Giovanni’s friend and colleague, Paolo Borsellino, another anti-mafia judge, was also killed by a car bomb in Palermo. The murders of Falcone and Borsellino are considered as two of the most tragic and heroic events in the history of Italy, and they are commemorated every year by the Italian people and the state. Falcone and Borsellino were both awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Valor and were acknowledged as martyrs of the Catholic Church. They were also named as heroes of the last 60 years in the 13 November 2006 issue of Time.
