Nangolo Mbumba was born on 15 August 1941 (age: 82 years, as of 2023) in Olukonda, a village in the Oshikoto Region of northern Namibia. He is the son of Erastus and Johanna Mbumba, who were both teachers and activists. He attended the Oshigambo High School, a Lutheran mission school, where he excelled academically and became involved in the liberation struggle against the apartheid regime of South Africa, which occupied Namibia at the time. He joined SWAPO in 1959 and became one of its youth leaders. He was arrested several times by the South African authorities for his political activities and spent some time in prison.

In 1969, he managed to escape to Zambia, where SWAPO had its headquarters. He received a scholarship from the United Nations to study in the United States, where he pursued his higher education.
